BECOMING A MEMBER OF THE UNIVERSITY CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO

Individuals are eligible for University Club membership regardless of race, religion, age, gender or sexual orientation.

Given the finite capacity of our facilities, and to foster an atmosphere of collegiality rather than anonymity, the Club’s bylaws limit the size of our membership. In considering candidates for membership, we look for individuals who are able and willing to contribute to the cultural and intellectual life of the Club, its diversity, fellowship, service programs, squash program and/or have unique talents. Though traditionally individuals apply for University Club membership at the invitation of existing members, we welcome applications from individuals new to our community.

The first step in the membership process is to arrange for a tour and initial interview with Dan Arroyo, our Membership Director. Please contact him at membership@univclub.com or call 415 781 0900.

A synopsis on the candidate will then be sent to the Admissions Committee, for consideration of a twelve month provisional membership. Upon favorable initial Admissions Committee review, the candidate and (if applicable) his/her designated spouse or registered domestic partner are invited to a cocktail reception to meet with the members of the Admissions Committee.

Upon being subsequently notified of the Admissions Committee’s approval of provisional membership and the tendering of the appropriate initiation fee, the candidate is granted full privileges (excluding voting and equity ownership) for a twelve month period. This provisional membership period provides an opportunity for the Club’s membership to get to know the candidate, and for the candidate to experience the Club and develop relationships leading to the necessary sponsor, seconder, and letters of recommendation.

During provisional membership, monthly dues are paid and, at its commencement, the admission fee. The amount of the admission fee shall be set based on the applicant’s age at date of provisional membership approval, and is refundable in the event that full membership is not approved by the Admissions Committee at the end of the provisional period.

Prior to the end of the provisional period, and upon the emergence of a sponsor, seconder and letters of recommendation from a minimum of three additional members, the applicant will be posted for 21 days for membership comment. Upon receiving a letter of invitation from the Admissions Committee, the membership book and a copy of the bylaws shall be signed, whereupon the individual shall become a full member of the Club. Should there be a waiting list for the membership category applied for, the individual shall be placed on the Elected Waiting List, with full privileges except voting and equity ownership.

A member’s designated spouse or designated registered domestic partner may apply for full privileges (excluding voting and equity ownership), to include the provisional and regular membership period. Spouse/partner charges will be included on the member’s bill unless separate billing is requested. Spouses/partners are encouraged to take an active role in club life, including serving on committees. A member’s children are also welcome in both the clubhouse and athletic facility (properly accompanied in the case of younger children).
